Moving Perspectives

Part 2 Dissertation 2012

This study focuses on the theories of derive and genus loci and their relevance to the
concept of the continuity of the urban form. The inspiration for my approach to the
topic came from the book ‘‘Invisible Cities’’ by Italo Calvino.

The study is based on the personal perspectives of Liverpool of four different individuals who have a unique involvement with the city and explores the relevance of the urban environment to everyone and how it is influenced by the situation of each individual.

It traces the movements of the four selected persona within the city during one day and
takes the form of a series of “snapshot” discussions of specific locations from their
individual perspectives. From these we see that personal circumstances and purpose
influence how the individual relates to their surroundings.

For many architects perception and awareness of the environment in which they are
working are seen as key to good design. Can it be argued that in reality, good design
evolves from the unique people who inhabit the environment over a period of time?
And how does peripheral vision influence how we see a specific structure or location?
Walk with us through the city of Liverpool and explore your own “Moving Perspectives”.
