Architecture & Ornament: A question of the balance between complexity and order Part 1 Dissertation 2017 Jasmine Armaly Arts University Bournemouth | UK Architecture and Ornament explores the debate around the function of ornament and how attitudes towards ornament have evolved over time. Drawing on the writings of Austrian architect Adolf Loos (1870-1933) and art historian Ernst Gombrich (1909-2001), this study revisits some concrete examples of ornamented buildings to argue that ornamentation is not purely cosmetic but rather is closely coupled with the human psyche to fulfill humans’ innate desire for beauty.
