Reveal or Conceal? Joinery, Truth and Technology

Part 1 Dissertation 2018
Harry Thorpe
Arts University Bournemouth | UK
This essay considers the joint within architecture and architect’s decision to either reveal or conceal how materials are joined in construction. Revealing the joint allows one to see how the joint operates; concealing the joint attempts to hide such from the eye. Case studies include the architects Mies van der Rohe, Carlo Scarpa, and Gerrit Reitveld, as well as traditional Japanese carpentry.
