In history, new transformations in architecture were due to the ongoing debates, guided by the dialectic philosophy from the 4th-century Greek philosopher. The debates role was to provide a platform where theories would evolve in a progressive flow of discourse. In architecture, from Modernism to postmodernism, there was introduction of many new theories in a short period of time due to many debates that challenge current ideologies. However, contemporary debates have been facing a lot of criticism from architectural critics, the media ad resistance groups from the profession, who claims the debates have become stagnant unlike before and hence there is domination of architecture of Neoliberalism driven by the market, death of many contemporary styles, homogeneity and the scarcity of new theories. Therefore, all these critics and commentaries have led to the question ""what constitutes an effective debate?

The study is an analysis and investigation of the composition of major debates from the period of modernism, postmodernism and deconstructivism. Then it is compared to contemporary debate to observe its changes in its meaning, execution and identify its potential weakness. The study then suggest on strategies to improve debates in architecture through new debate format and use of new theory.
