Spoila, or the Accumulations of Heritage Part 2 Dissertation 2020 Moad Musbahi Architectural Association London | UK This thesis considers examples of architecture and literature from across the Cornish coast to Ancient Rome and drawing on from direct research in Libya and Morocco, and local historical sources, held in both Arabic and Western archives. It explores a method that creates a view with which to question what heritage could be? And how do we understand its context, modes of authorship and value?By framing “heritage” as a verb, an ever-unceasing enactment, a continual achievement, rather than a fixed object it also seeks to creates a disturbance in what constitutes ‘architecture’. This thesis imagines new formations of authorship and creative acts that break down the distinction between writing and building. It considers objects of heritage to have a mnemonic resonance that may exceed our current ability to comprehend them.Climate change has made us reassess and question the foundations of our knowledge. It requires us to think through new paradigms of living together and inhabiting the earth.Alongside the necessary scientific expertise, this urgent opportunity prompts us to look back, re-investigate our histories and methods of practice, and imagine a future that is predicated on cultural practices and forms of life that are equitable and sustainable.
