Problematic Heritage: Analysis of the Values of Lithuanian Architecture of the Soviet Era Part 1 Dissertation 2020 Jonas Mingaila University of Portsmouth | UK Ever since breaking away from the Soviet Union in 1990, the small country of Lithuania has been modernising in the hope of achieving a modern society such as in Western Europe. In this drive, however, the question of USSR era architecture still stands. As buildings are approaching a critical age, a question must be asked whether it is better to renovate them at great cost or leave them to decay and eventually be demolished. This dissertation analyses such projects architecturally and contextually to determine what makes them unique. After which, they are further analysed through the lens of Alois Riegl’s classic essay “The Cult of Monuments” to determine which of the described values they posses and whether it makes them worth saving.
