Open Source Urbanism Part 2 Dissertation 2021 Beth Mogey Queen's University Belfast | UK Cities are incomplete urban infrastructures. Constantly evolving, sprawling and expanding to meet a changing dynamic in population and technology. They have outlasted previous changes and are constantly reinventing themselves. They begin to morph to meet evolving needs. Open source urbanism describes this as a practice of innovation that is necessary for cities to thrive.This dissertation explores the theory of ‘Open Source Urbanism’ as stated by Saskia Sassen. The work focuses on the city as a whole and begins to explore different aspects of urbanism. The work is broken down into six different essays; ‘Form & Adaptability’, ’Modernity & Tradition’, ‘Economics’, ‘Tradition & Culture’, and ‘Proximity & Disruption’. Within each essay, different theories and architecture projects will be highlighted and discussed to explore the different topics and how they relate to open source urbanism, while also using my own experiences as a point of personal reference.The work will begin to touch on the complexity of cities and how the city works as a whole, as well as discuss the notion of distance from the inhabitants, the maker, and the wealth that feeds into the city. The essay will also highlight the limitation of imagination between what the city strives to achieve and how the city is currently being developed. Beth Mogey Tutor(s) Greg Keeffe
