Narrating Valletta Part 2 Dissertation 2022 Elena Gauci Kingston University Kingston | UK How is it possible to convey the atmosphere of a city, its sense of place? Valletta, my subject of exploration, is a city that enchants the visitor with its hybrid culture and its living architecture, evoking a palimpsest of layers erased and rewritten across the depth of time by its people and their stories. The desire to understand the intangible qualities of the city and its architecture is the driver behind this dissertation. It is a personal attempt to represent the richness of the city’s multiple faces and offer an opportunity to reconsider the way we think, see, understand and feel architecture. The act of walking and narration are taken as key methods with the potential of offering a different experience of the city’s environment. It is an attempt to read a place by revealing and experiencing the language imprinted and ciphered onto its streets, through the exploration of the senses, the gesture of walking and ultimately, narrative.
