Work Hard, Play Harder Part 1 Dissertation 2022 Dylan White Ravensbourne University London | UK Throughout the much of the world, capitalism governs the ways in which we move throughout urban spaces. Like cities, games are also a product of capitalism. This dissertation emerges from the observation that both cities and games have been designed using a systemic ‘push’ that relinquishes city explorers of their freedom. Looking through the lens of Kevin Lynch’s The Image of the City (1960) and Guy Debord’s Society of the Spectacle (1967), this study compares the virtual environment within the game God of War 4 (2018), and the real environment of The City of Westminster in central London. By applying the ideas underpinning ‘push’ in the design for God of War 4 to the City of Westminster, this dissertation demonstrates how and when ‘push’ is experienced similarly in both virtual and real spaces, exploring the implications for this concept when applied to how we experience the city.
