Mise en Scène of Non-Architecture: L’Italia dell’Effimero Part 2 Dissertation 2023 Alice Vetrugno Mackintosh School of Architecture | UK In this dissertation, I argue that ephemeral architecture - one that is purely designed so that it can disappear after a short period of time - is a more powerful means of communication tool for change of the urban fabric than a simple permanent public building. I aim to investigate how “non-architecture” as “architecture of event” focuses on bringing people together through its aspiration for wonder and desire to reconstruct collective imagination, and it provides the tools for the regeneration of spaces for collective life. Ultimately, I will demonstrate this by analysing the key festivals in Italy during the well-known and turbulent Anni di Piombo (“Years of Lead”): Estate Romana, Roma Interrotta, and the construction of the Teatro del Mondo for the first International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale.This paper builds upon and challenge Federica Fava’s analysis of the Estate Romana, Lea Catherine Szacka’s studies of Roma Interrotta and the commentary on the Teatro del Mondo by Aldo Rossi, with the writings of the architect on the Architecture of the City, to demonstrate and question the link between ephemeral architecture and its context.
