Remembering Robin Hood Gardens through Physical Manifestation Part 2 Dissertation 2023 Alexander Lucas Grice University of Kent | UK The aim of this research was to create a 1 to 50, museum quality, scale model that captured and preserved the essence of ‘Robin Hood Gardens’.Architectural models are often used to sell unbuilt visions, providing miniature physical manifestation of designs. Presentation models depict pristine environments, idealizing what finished structures will be. The purpose of this research was to challenge this. As opposed to depicting a future design, the aim was to create a model that immortalized a problematic lost building, known as ‘Robin Hood Gardens’, capturing its lived-in state.Architectural scale models can be utilised as a physical embodiment of knowledge, presenting information and complex concepts in an easily accessible and informative manner. The research undertaken led to an understanding of how scale models could embody multi layered information and how the physical manifestation of this information could effectively be portrayed within museum settings for educative purposes. The final model that was built was inspired by the inhabitation and public perception of ‘Robin Hood Gardens’. The physical artefact acting as an embodiment of the research. Alongside this artefact was included a supporting report that recorded the initial investigations, documented the model construction and provided reflections on the finished piece.
