Reclaimed by Nature: The Harmony Between Architecture and Nature Part 2 Dissertation 2023 Beatriz Pereira Teixeira University of Central Lancashire | UK My exploration of the relationship between architecture and nature began with a fascination for how plants thrive in different environments. This led me to collect photographs of greenery on building facades in Lisbon and question why this harmony is not more prevalent in our cities and lives.I studied the works of architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Antoni Gaudi, Tadao Ando, and Zaha Hadid to understand how they achieved a harmonious relationship between architecture and nature. Victor Papanek's book The Green Imperative stood out as a key reference. However, there is still a disconnect between the way we build and nature, resulting in climate change and ecological destruction. Environmentalist George Monbiot calls for urgent change. My research aims to highlight the ability of nature to thrive on its own, as seen in abandoned places, and to simplify the daunting task of reconnecting with nature. Architects play a crucial role in building ethically and meaningfully, but it is essential to retrieve a harmonious relationship between nature, the planet, and humankind.
