The Housing Crisis in Sweden: An Analysis of the Housing Shortage and the Obstacles for Building More Affordable Housing Part 2 Dissertation 2024 Alexandra Grönberg Mackintosh School of Architecture | UK The Swedish housing market faces significant challenges, some being high housing prices and long housing queues for rentals - and the increased personal debts this might cause. The main issue is often argued to be the high demand for affordable rental flats and the insufficient supply to meet this demand. This research paper investigates whether active political strategies exist to balance the demand and identifies key obstacles hindering development. By conducting an inductive methodology, the paper includes an extensive literature review to develop a comprehensive theoretical framework to contextualise the current situation. This information is used to drive the empirical analysis through interviews and case studies. The overall aim is to understand multiple perspectives and the effect different solutions might have. This dissertation can be described as a housing policy review. While my primary hope is to encourage conversation, the purpose is also to develop my knowledge of the housing market of my home country. While this dissertation does not conclude a solution to the housing crisis, it addresses the ethical and political challenge in how to meet the demand. It also suggests that Sweden might need a thorough revision of the regulatory framework on the housing market. Alexandra Grönberg Tutor(s) Florian Urban
