The emerging paradigm of 3D Printed Construction has been presented with a shine and sheen by Architectural Media, praising its capacity to disrupt the existing ways in which we design with previously unimaginable efficiency and expediency. 3DP Construction is one of several emerging Exponential Technologies that will indefinitely impact the way we live. The shifting dynamics of urbanisation are tightly interwoven with the advancements of technology, with 3DP construction presenting a substantive shift which on its current trajectory has the potential to intensify existing malpractices, most notably contributing to significant urban sprawl.

But what if we reframe our scope of analysis beyond the scale of the building? What are the implications of 3DP construction at the urban scale? How does it align with our current theories? How does this knowledge impact the way we design and operate?

Exponential Urbanisation engages with an abductive process of theory generation, development and appraisal to synthesise an urban design framework for 3DP construction, a toolkit to inform design approaches within an emerging design field. This foundational step adopts a relational approach to consider the broader implications of 3DP construction, looking beyond nodes of agglomeration to the expansive operational landscapes supporting our hyperconnected, localised world.
