Queering Youth Spaces or Rejuvenating Queer Spaces: An Exploration into the Social Affordances for Queer Teenagers in Public Space Part 2 Dissertation 2024 Anna Fabiola Knight González University of Reading | UK Inspired by the experiences of many of my loved ones as well as my own, this research examines how queer teenagers inhabit and appropriate public spaces, with emphasis on third places. Far from portraying queer teenagers as victims of their circumstances, this research provides a snapshot of how this continuously changing demographic occupies and perceives the socialising places available to them. Considering that The Great Good Place was first published over forty years ago, the dissertation expands on Ray Oldenburg’s definitions with 21st century LGBTQ+ youth in mind. A key finding of this research was that queer teenagers, as the embodiment of two liminal identities, continuously question and reimagine the status quo and how providing them with third places to gather can benefit wider society. Whilst this research reiterates the agency of queer teenagers and the influence they have over the spaces they inhabit, it also highlights that local authorities and people in power could do more for this community. Thus, the research postulates a set of parameters to outline the attributes of queer youth third places, not as a formula to freeze them in time, but as an encouragement to imagine and create more.
