Reviving the Soul of Cities: The role of cross-cultural marketplaces and their traditions in urban regeneration Part 1 Dissertation 2025 Raean Mohammad University of Wolverhampton Wolverhampton | UK In my dissertation I delve into the role our marketplaces play in the cities we live in. Cities are living, breathing entities, changing constantly, and adapting to new challenges.Marketplaces are a big part in reshaping communities and revitalising forgotten spaces amongst the sites in the modern city. It is a cultural hub presenting the soul of the city, its genius loci (the spirit of place). This dissertation aims to focus on the significance of marketplaces in maintaining cultural heritage, encouraging inclusivity, and revitalising public areas. They are where people gather, where local traditions thrive, and where the spirit of a neighbourhood comes alive. But as commercialisation grows and urban homogenisation becomes more popular, these spaces are at risk of being neglected and overshadowed. It discusses essential roles marketplaces have in fostering a city’s cultural heritage and social inclusion and the essential role it plays in the regeneration of a city’s urban space. The foundation of this harmony is planning. Cities can ensure that marketplaces stay vibrant and accessible cultural hubs by adopting innovative planning policies and strategies that help shape the urban regeneration of these cities.
