As homes become ‘smart’, digital technologies are progressively becoming embedded within our everyday existence. This thesis investigates how the digitisation of the domestic space has redefined the boundaries between private and public, beginning with the household telephone through to the digital screen. This transformation has notably accelerated during the Coronavirus pandemic, where periods of isolation exposed how much more of public life could be enacted within the home, intensifying our reliance on digital technologies.

Through engaging with psychoanalytical theory, this thesis aims to uncover the spatial and psychological relationship between the occupant and their private dwelling, as well as a deeper understanding of the captivating allure of the screen. It examines the drives that propel the growing presence of the screen within the home, as well as the appearance of the home within the screen, allowing for an examination of the tensions that ensue.

This research takes part in discourse that focuses on the spatial politics of the private home as an increasingly contested territory. As the threshold between public and private continues to be redefined, it is imperative for the architectural profession to become a point of mediation that can provide agency over the privacy of one’s home.
