Women Awake: Feminist approaches to reclaiming the built environment

Using feminist theory, 'Women Awake: Feminist approaches to reclaiming the built environment' demonstrates how gender bias has subtly permeated architectural planning and design across time. The essay emphasises how the constructed environment has historically been influenced by male-centric values and the building modulor, resulting in a physical environment that subconsciously disadvantages women's daily existence.

The piece examines how gendered presumptions have influenced space and access, using MATRIX Architects 'Jagonari Women's centre' as a key case study, and further compares modern circumstances with the 1970s "New Architecture Movement". Drawing upon feminist works such as Caroline Criado Perez's "Invisible Women" and MATRIX Architects' "Making Space", the essay urges a change to inclusive, intersectional design with the goal of elevating the voices of women in architecture and urban planning.

Asking whether a feminist analysis of architecture exists, and if so, what lessons can be learnt from it and how can it be used to reinterpret women in space. The result is a critical analysis of how feminist perspectives might push the boundaries of tokenism and transform the built environment in the direction of spatial equality.
