The Urban Kaleidoscope

Part 1 Project 2025

This design explores the market as an “urban kaleidoscope” with layers of experiences, settings, views, smells, flavors, colors, and urban dynamics.

In this sense, it aims to define a contemporary urban market for the UAE by unifying with two prominent paths the experiential qualities of the market with the activities and conditions from the site in Deira, Dubai.

Its structure reveals an intricate interior of geometry that sits on top of a platform that rises the market for enhanced views and binds together all the dynamics that emerge from its program.

Its geometrical approach creates overlapping conditions that allow natural light to come from operable skylights and let the wind circulate the site favoring the temperature. The operable skylights provide natural ventilation during favorable weather conditions. The design benefits from more natural light and multiple views allowed by a screen that distinguishes the volumes of the market from its mass elements.

The design also achieves sustainability by activating the urban fabric providing what is missing on the site: an urban center for acquiring, sharing, indulging, and performing. It connects the surroundings (with views, prominent paths, other experiential qualities) allowing people to engage with many layers of dynamics, an “urban kaleidoscope.”
