Waasala is a modern luxury city hotel in Anuradhapura that reinterprets the spatial and symbolic language of Sri Lanka’s monumental heritage. Rooted in the idea of the traditional waasala which is a noble residence organized around a central courtyard while this design offers a contemporary architectural response to culture, context, and climate.
Inspired by the sacred geometry of the stupa, the layered thresholds of the moonstone, and the processional rhythm of ancient temples, the hotel transforms these elements into an immersive hospitality experience. Guests move through transitional spaces from public arrival zones to private sanctuaries, guided by form, material, and elemental cues.

Set beside the Kubichankulama Tank and a developing transport hub, Waasala becomes a civic landmark that connects travellers to living heritage through experiential tourism, cultural exchange, and sustainable engagement with local communities. Materiality defines its identity inspired features create a sensory dialogue between tradition and modern refinement.

At its heart, the project embodies the philosophy “Between the Pause and the Flow.” It is a place where the stillness of Anuradhapura’s heritage meets the movement of contemporary life, inviting guests to pause, reflect, and flow seamlessly into a deeper connection with culture, nature, and community.
