The De-ano

Part 1 Project 2023

De-ano (Dean Piano) brings together the public and the musician in a new way, a social condenser for classical music. It is foremost a venue but also a background building, where music takes its place amongst the city life, its accessible, seen, not on a pedestal far from view. Here you can listen, learn, and perform in a community. Knowledge of an instrument does not feel like a requirement for entry.

The building has an advantageous position, in sight from the Dean Bridge, to many the city’s front door, it greets Edinburgh’s visitors. Yet it remains free from the noise, in the Dean Village, green and peaceful it offers respite.

The area is a destination in its own right, but the building adds amenities, a café and bar. People will visit for reasons other than just music, yet it’ll provide a captive audience, now more open and willing to hear a performance or learn an instrument.

Connected to the street by the practice rooms, which serve the role of a shop window. Whenever a pedestrian passes on the street, they’ll be able see and perhaps even hear a clarinet, violin or harp inside. All within sight and within reach.
