A Place for the Facilitation of Informality within a Suburban Context Influenced by the Kibera Slums

The Kibera slums in Kenya is often attributed to depravity, lack and poverty. This is an accurate assessment of the slum conditions, within Nairobi as the slum is plagued by inhumane material challenges, including the lack of basic sanitation, lack of clean water, lack of electricity and lack of decent housing.

However, despite the disadvantage the locals are operating from, they have managed to create an eco-system amongst themselves that is highly innovative in nature. The eco-system is characterised by an intricate social web, an unwavering resilience powered by community participation and engagement and finally a sense of vibrancy in the air enabling each community member to feel valued.

In contrast, we have a Suburb in Cottam, Preston UK. The residents have access to all material wealth, however despite this the area feels isolated, rigid and lacks the spirit of community. Therefore my aim is to extrapolate lessons from Kibera and apply them to Cottam. These lessons are special instances within the slums that exhibit human ingenuity and innovation. The outcome is to create an intervention that will push the locals to explore different ways to gather as a community and break the formality within Cottam.
