Crafting Infill

Part 1 Project 2025

Crafting Infill reimagines urban densification through the activation of underutilised gaps, interstitial spaces and overlooked plots in the existing urban fabric. Positioned opposite St Luke’s Church, the project responds directly to the Islington Local Plan’s call for mixed-use and community projects, drawing together existing programmes of the public buildings in the surrounding community to propose flexible spaces that support music education, community engagement, and arts outreach.

The ground floor, rendered in brick, forms a civic plinth that engages the public realm, while the lighter timber construction above accommodates residential units. A modular and site-sensitive approach balances public programme and permeability, private dwelling, and material clarity to stitch new architecture into the city. The residential system of wall/window/shutter introduces spatial flexibility through variable infill, creating a tactile inhabitable envelope.

Material and spatial choices are grounded in constructional clarity, celebrating natural materials to enhance both environmental performance and spatial experience. Historic pedestrian routes are reinstated, enriching local connectivity and encouraging urban continuity.

The accompanying construction manual presents the proposal as a replicable model for contextually sensitive infill development, blending sustainable construction, craftsmanship, and community-oriented design.
