Rural Reclamation

Part 2 Project 2025

When control of land is held by those prioritising economic rather than social investment, the voices of those living on the land are often not heard. Considering the concentrated nature of landownership in Scotland, it is inevitable that most recent development does not understand nor meet local need. This project looks to an alternative design and delivery method of providing housing in the accessible rural area, the fastest growing area in Scotland.

Understanding is drawn from historic and immediately contemporary sources, combining land-use and ownership patterns lost to the agricultural revolution with present-day community led housing projects.

The goal is to suggest a development framework, supported by changes to our current outdated planning and landownership systems, that places control of development in the hands of people who live there, which would lead to a more diverse and sustainable development when compared to the present spread of homogenous suburbs. The latter responding neither to the physical, social or economic landscape yet are prevalent due to systems or landownership and planning that favour those with power, as they have done since first formation.
