Part 1 Project 2025

This project explores the speculative revival of the ancient, long-suppressed religion of Manichaeism through architecture. Set within the Burmantofts area of Leeds, the proposal reimagines a monastery as both a spiritual sanctuary and a cultural rebellion. Inspired by the Manichaean belief in the cosmic struggle between light and darkness, the architecture physically expresses this duality through spatial contrast, material tension, and ritualistic pathways. The design aims to provoke reflection on lost identities, forgotten histories, and the potential for spiritual renewal in contemporary society. Through spaces such as the Chanting Hall, Catacombs, and Observatory Tower, the monastery functions as a living manifesto opening the door to both practitioners and the public to engage with the metaphysical and the mystical. This work challenges conventional religious architecture, offering a powerful vision of how faith, memory, and form can converge to reshape urban space.
