Echoes of Ipswich

Part 1 Project 2025

Echoes of Ipswich, a neo-brutalist project built to respond to the fragmented community and history of the Ipswich waterfront. The site, which sits on an industrial island on the Ipswich Waterfront gave me an opportunity to design something that wasn’t just a building, but more of a public experience driven by sound, spatial sequence, and reused materials.

The main focus was on connecting communities through a shared cultural space. I used key Spatial Narratives like the Resonant Pathway, the Soundscape Centre, and the Harmony Hub to break up the massing and offer multiple access points and uses, including performance, education, and public gathering. This allowed the building to stay active and adaptable, while keeping sound and movement at the centre of the design.

The architecture uses recycled bricks and concrete taken from derelict sites around Ipswich. This not only lowers the environmental impact, but also gives the project an aged, textural quality that matches its location. I also introduced light tunnels to get sunlight into the lower levels, solving problems with both atmosphere and safety.

Overall, the project is about bringing identity and purpose to a neglected space, using architecture to connect people through culture and sensory experience.
