Synthetic Biology Live/Work Research Centre

Part 1 Project 2020

Science is built up of facts, as a house is built of stones: but an accumulation of facts is no more a science than a heap of stones is a house (Poincare, 1952)

Synthetic biology – the harnessing of organically occurring microorganisms for the development of new biological materials, products and technologies – is a prominent facet of the UK bio-economy. Within the current unpredictable ontological landscape, UK Government is investing in developing this sector currently led by corporate industrial-academic partnerships. By refocusing on developing infrastructure to aid entrepreneurs, new models for working can generate radical new technologies currently restricted by a ‘big business’ approach.

Located in the global business hub of Canary Wharf, the project proposes a spatial symbiosis of live/work accommodation, DfMA laboratories, business and commercial spaces. The research centre, with on-site accommodation to encourage global connectivity, will facilitate a growing base of independent designers, material scientists and industrial entrepreneurs to develop outside of the existing confines of industrial corporations and academic institutions with an organic, authentic materiality approach to structural expressionism with a strong focus on integrating the high-tech with an inner-city naturalism.
