Penzance Heritage Centre Part 1 Project 2019 Maja Oparnica University of East London London | UK Within the westernmost major town in England, rises a Heritage Centre, celebrating its forgotten history. The project is located in Penzance, at the site of the offices of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company. As the biggest employer in town, the Company has been a prominent presence for 100 years. Today, focus has shifted entirely to the Islands, overlooking the town, and the Company exists only as a vague presence. Driven by the historical connection between the Company and Penzance, historical maps and photographs were studied and translated into the proposal. The proposal intends to benefit both the town and the Company, envisioned as a singular Centre divided into three parts. Firstly, a museum, displaying their intertwined maritime richness which creates a window into Penzance and the work of the Company, both for visitors and locals. Secondly, a multi-function space, given to Penzance for use by its local institutions. And lastly, a new headquarters for the Company, which reinstates the importance of its presence in this location. On an elevated land overlooking Penzance harbour, the Heritage Centre emerges, reflecting traces of the town’s history; creating an aperture to its future.
