How to levitate an egg, person and house?

By 2042, most of London’s population can sense air. A shift catalysed by Sense 6, a speculative R&D program exploring a future where technology makes air palpable. This shift transforms air from a passive backdrop into a designed and commodified medium, reshaping how we perceive air quality and microclimates.

The project critiques the existing ‘Economy of Breathing’. As air quality deteriorates, purified interiors rise in commonality, from pure air rooms in Beijing to airtight luxury bunkers preparing for climate catastrophe. These technofixes create stark divisions as interiors evolve into curated airscapes, while exterior spaces degrade into atmospheric no man’s land.

Sense6 was initially established to research air as a medium, they identified the lack of human agency caused by air’s intangibility. Their response was nanoprosthetics, enabling individuals to sense the information carried in each breath. This heightened awareness sparked a new era of atmospheric R&D.

From model airscape homes to pneumatic products, Sense6’s designs accelerate air’s commodification. Cheaper alternatives spur retrofit airscapes and unexpected innovation. The project speculates across scales from national relocation patterns and urban air filtration systems to levitating inhabitants and flying cutlery. The designs are for an air-orientated society, exposing the already existing ‘Economy of Breathing’ that stratifies breathers by wealth.
