Reimagining Cultural Heritage for Community Renewal

This project proposes an adaptive masterplan to revitalize Cheung Chau through the reimagination of its most iconic cultural event — the Tai Ping Ching Jiu Festival. Despite its rich heritage, the festival faces existential threats due to youth migration, declining skilled labour, and environmental strain. By transforming the festival’s infrastructure into multifunctional, year-round public spaces, the design supports both ritual and daily life.

At the heart of the proposal is a modular “Ascension Rig” that serves as a crane during festival preparation, and a flexible civic platform throughout the year. The bun tower becomes an educational landmark, while workshops double as community bakeries, craft spaces, and intergenerational hubs. These interventions form a toolkit that activates the island’s full annual calendar, integrating the festival into everyday life — from rituals to music festivals to local gatherings.

Merging cultural preservation with spatial innovation, the project positions heritage as a catalyst for economic resilience, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability — ensuring Cheung Chau’s living traditions continue to evolve with its people.
