Long associated with violence, Derry/Londonderry still carries the weight of The Troubles. Although decades of conflict have formally ended, generational trauma, underinvestment and continued division have left a ‘Divided Landscape’ across the city.

This redevelopment aims to reconnect the city and its communities through ecologically-led neutral spaces that unite people through a shared climate objective. By transcending religious and political boundaries, it supports the growth of a vibrant, sustainable urban environment where people and nature thrive together.

Rooted in the etymology of the city’s name Doire, meaning oak grove, the project draws inspiration from the oak ecosystem, now embraced as a symbol of peace. Through this, a network of ecologically rich spines and green spaces branch out across the city, offering neutral places for communities.

These connected landscapes support more than connection; they introduce resilient approaches to water, energy, biodiversity and sustainable transport, creating people-first streets that encourage active lifestyles and interaction. At the heart lies Foyle City Park, a unifying central space manifesting as an ecological and cultural journey along the river that embodies the connection of the divided city.

Through nature-led regeneration, the vision overcomes division to position Derry/Londonderry as a forward-looking place of renewal and shared celebration.
