'The Stitch' Library: A landmark for reconnection

Part 1 Project 2025

The construction of the Westlink in Belfast was arguably an intentional act to sever communities and disrupt urban flow to reduce social connectivity. My site is the Orange Hall, located between Clifton Street and Regent Street. The Westlink severed Regent Street, reinforcing divisions between Protestant and Catholic communities. This inspired me to create a space where both communities could meet in the middle.

Like a needle stitching fabric, 'The Stitch' Library reconnects Regent Street, seamlessly merging the current dead-end footpaths into a continuous seam.

My project centres on adaptive reuse, preserving much of the historic building while introducing a new extension- the "plinth"- which bridges over the Westlink, creating a vibrant hub for learning, culture, and community. The building offers a variety of public spaces, including a library, reading hall, cafe, auditorium, and art exhibition. Surrounding landscaping introduces a park, bike and pedestrian paths, and outdoor seating, fostering social and intellectual interaction in the city's heart.
