Climate change is forcing millions of people to leave their homes. The majority of those who do, move short distances and stay within the borders of their countries. Governments should be planning for these mass migrations but that is not the case.

This thesis examines the current context and experience of climate induced internal displacement at three scales - the global, the personal and the local. Recognising that existing systems of support for displaced persons often reinforce marginalisation, it asks - what then can ‘the self’ do in situations of climate precarity and resource scarcity?

Displaced persons inhabit a liminal space where mobility is the one of the most constant factors. As such the thesis proposal – The Platform -intervenes in the transitional space in-between a place left behind and a place travelled to, both psychologically and physically.

Built around the phone, it suggests a self-sustained digital and physical meeting ground for sharing ideas and accessing a wide range of tools out of restriction. The local site of inquiry and intervention is the oil-rich and heavily exploited Niger Delta Region in Nigeria– a place long burdened by environmental degradation and neglect.
