School is City, City is School

Part 2 Project 2025

The thesis uses the RAAC crisis as a catalyst to question not only the technical failure of a material, but the deeper typological redundancy embedded in the UK's mainstream school system. Using Hornsey School in Haringey as a testbed, the project responds directly to DfE policy on RAAC management and capital funding, critiquing the current tendency towards like-for-like replacement with a radical alternative which can benefit both education and the wider civic landscape. Rather than treating decant as temporary disruption, the project reframes it as a design tool, using the relocation of students into nearby civic buildings to test new spatial models for learning. These include libraries, coworking studios, parks, and town halls, which offer multi-sensory, real-world learning experiences that surpass the limits of traditional classrooms. The pedagogical insights gained from this urban dispersal directly inform the design of a new school typology: not just a rebuilt school, but a future-facing civic institution, co-owned by its community, embedded in its context, and capable of evolving over time.
