Market in Chancay

Part 1 Project 2025
María Isabela Rodriguez
University of Lima | Peru
This project proposes the design of a new market in Chancay, Peru, as a response to the urban and social impacts triggered by the construction of the megaport. The proposal aims to restore the market's role as a public space, integrating meeting areas, green zones, and a functional structure that addresses local commercial dynamics. Organised through a central axis and a modular grid, the programme is distributed in volumes with cross ventilation and clear access points, maintaining 40% of the site as open space. An exposed steel structure allows for spaciousness, flexibility, and a contemporary architectural expression. The result is an intervention that goes beyond commercial needs, engaging with the city’s transformation and strengthening urban identity and community connections.
