Museo del Fuego Santo

Part 1 Project 2025

Located in the culturally rich neighbourhood of Gràcia, Barcelona, this museum reactivates a historic public square once known for its food market and community gatherings. The project responds to both the memory of the Red Terror of 1936 and the urban fabric of the city, offering a place for reflection, education, and civic life. Exhibitions are arranged as a spatial timeline, before, during, and after the conflict, guiding visitors through a carefully arranged architectural journey of history and recovery.

The scheme is composed of two buildings at opposite ends of the site. The main structure houses the museum galleries, while a secondary block supports community activity through a library, workshops, offices, retail, and public facilities. This dual arrangement frames the central square and enhances movement through the site, promoting accessibility and everyday use beyond the museum itself.

The exterior design responds thoughtfully to the site’s dense urban context and environmental needs. A calm, low-lying form with a continuous façade is complemented by oak columns, solar shading, and a subtle rooftop drainage system, balancing sustainability with visitor comfort. Nearby, a church destroyed during the Red Terror and later rebuilt adds historical significance. The project aims to connect people, memory, and place through architecture that is grounded and inclusive.
