From Body to Biotope: Entangled landscapes beyond death

Part 1 Project 2025

This design project proposes an Aquamation Centre at the arrival platform of Orfordness, offering a gentle, ecological alternative to traditional body disposition. Rooted in the process of water cremation, the centre transforms death into a ritual of return – where the body dissolves, nourishes, and re-enters the island’s fragile ecosystem as part of an ongoing cycle. Drawing on theories of impermanence and ecological interdependence, the proposal reframes death not as an end, but as a generative act embedded within the temporal rhythms of the landscape. The design unfolds as a sequence of symbolic spaces, inspired by body, water, and plant metaphors. Materially grounded in the site – using flint, thatch, and timber – and responsive to Orfordness’ history of erosion, decay, and resilience, the building embraces change. A living façade decomposes over time, supporting habitats, while water and bone remnants from aquamation are reintegrated into the land, nourishing plant life. Positioned at the site’s ferry arrival point, the centre acts as both gateway and threshold – initiating a contemplative journey into ritual space. Through architecture, the project fosters reflection, ecological repair, and emotional renewal reinforcing Orfordness as a place where memory, matter and meaning are continually reshaped by the movement of water.
