Florey’s Last Act

Part 1 Project 2025

The project reimagines James Stirling’s abandoned Florey building structure as a space for community use and public theatre. It aims to break down the private, collegiate history of the building and give it a new lease of life through opening it up to the residents of Oxford. The proposal will provide a new venue for public performance, cultural expression and social interaction.

The existing Florey building faces the meadows and the historic city, turning its back on the surrounding Oxford neighbourhood. The project aims to re-orientate the structure and improved its local presence by removing the current southern quad and creating a spacious 1,350 m² south-facing public square that connects back to St Clements Street, at the heart of the district.

The introduction of a riverfront walkway, an unrealised original proposal by Stirling, further improves pedestrian connections and legibility from Magdalen Bridge. This boardwalk creates a theatrical entrance along the river, culminating in a public gallery that frames the new the structure and overlooks the meadows. The theatre building itself is suspended in the void of the Florey courtyard, bridging to the main structure in select moments and propped up on as few columns as feasible to minimise the impact of the new foundations.
