Alfan: Where Making is Living

Alfan is a radical housing proposal rooted in the revival of leather craftsmanship within Deira, Dubai. Developed in response to the We Are Makers studio brief, the project explores how architecture can support low- and middle-income artisans like Mustafa—individuals often displaced by gentrification and excluded from formal housing.

The design reinterprets elements from historic Al Fahidi—sikkas, courtyards, and wind towers—to create a self-sustaining live/work community where craft and culture shape everyday life. Housing typologies range from solo units to multigenerational clusters, designed for affordability, flexibility, and shared infrastructure.

Through spatial layering, passive cooling strategies, and public craft zones, Alfan blurs the lines between home, workshop, and street. It critiques the exclusionary narratives of “family-friendly” development and instead proposes an architecture that is inclusive, memory-rich, and future-facing.

This project is not a preservation of form, but a continuation of spirit—an architecture of dignity, resilience, and resistance, where making becomes living.
