Mabgate Urban Farm Part 1 Project 2023 Rachel Derricutt University of Leeds Leeds | UK The brief has been built from the social and physical context of the area, to provide a solution that benefits the community of Mabgate. As Mabgate holds a wide and diverse community, there were many different directions that this community resource centre could take, including solutions that address the art scene, various charities around the area or providing valuable skills to the community. For this project, the resource of food has been chosen as a focus, due to the benefits of reducing food insecurity, but also the opportunity for the varied community to come together and bond through eating, cooking and learning about food. Food production is focused on lightweight etfe clad greenhouse towers which use hydroponics technologies to maximise output. There are also more conventional ground based growing strips. Food preparation, consumption and exchange are provided through a community kitchen and dining hall, as well as a market building. The site itself is opened up for public use, with the site around the beck reduced in level to promote biodiverse planting and habitat. Everything is organised on a rational grid which emphasises the high intensity technological approach to food production and its value as a community asset. Rachel Derricutt Tutor(s)
