“Among The Vines” explores the design of seasonal housing for vineyard workers in Chilham, Kent within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The project is sited adjacent to a newly established vineyard owned by a pioneering English wine company investing in the future of viticulture in the UK.

As climate change continues to make southern England increasingly viable for wine production, the project addresses the intersection of agricultural growth and rural housing needs.

Flexible residential units accommodate seasonal vineyard workers during the growing and harvest periods but transitions into holiday homes during the off-season. This dual-purpose use responds both to the practical demands of viticulture labour and to the economic opportunity presented by rural tourism in wine-producing regions.

The architectural approach embraces traditional building methods and local materials, including timber framing and wattle and daub construction harmonising within the landscape.

Through its exploration of temporary housing and adaptive reuse, the project proposes a design that supports agricultural activities, economic diversification and cultural identity in the English countryside.
