What is Pasar Seni without its “Seni”(Art)?

Pasar Seni area is part of Kuala Lumpur’s birth. It is transitional and moving, influx with shades of different culture, re-inventing itself and spontaneous. However, Every time you pass by this city, you will wonder why its present character does not reflect its name “Seni”. Indeed, Pasar Seni has transformed from a cultural centre to a commercial centre. All its activities are shifting away from its heart which is the Kelang River, leaving a lot of spaces to be abandoned.

What if the forgotten city of Pasar Seni is taken over by the School of Architecture? Imagine how the Architecture Students will use their knowledge and special skills while taking advantage of the city and use it as a workshop. Regardless of what the city will look like, at least, architecture can give it a new utilitarian. Another reason for its name to live on.

Pasar Seni Architecture is a project that articulates in its contexture approach weaving together both the school programme and the urban context. The School acts like a parasite, evolving along the Pasar Seni LRT station track, using its structure, capture the human flow coming in and out from the train transportation. Bringing the public to provoke its existence by walking and let them experience the celebration of Architecture. And at the same time, taking advantage of negative spaces and structures.

Thus, the effort was to actually create an interactive programme integrating the people in Pasar Seni into the Architecture School, which will provoke some debate, challenging the idea of experimenting University Malaya School to be put in the busiest area of Pasar Seni. Giving the Architecture School a new setting which students can learn through doing. They could use the city spaces for Research Experimentation and play a part in the urban such as street furniture by the 1st year, art presentation and browsing by the 2nd year, listening to expressions, urban analysis and many more.

The special Study tries to explore the student’s working and living space. What they produce in studio will then be brought to the Grand Juror Room to be judged. Thus, the design will respond to the spatial and functional elements for the prime’s user interface while encouraging interaction among juniors and seniors and among students and public.
