The Wool Towers Part 1 Project 2025 Anita Whelton Kingston University Kingston | UK This proposal introduces a wool-washing house set within the open landscape of New Romney. The project responds to the area's deep-rooted relationship with wool and water, reimagining traditional washing practices through a contemporary lens. Rooted in the marsh's flat terrain, the building rises gently from the ground, its vertical form referencing local markers such as lighthouses, water towers and telephone poles.Once a thriving port, New Romney was shaped by shifting tides and the historic wool trade. Romney Marsh remains home to Romney sheep, whose fleeces were traditionally washed in natural pools and streams. This heritage forms the foundation of the project, reconnecting the act of making with its original landscape and rhythm. Two concrete cores anchor the structure, housing water and circulation. Around them, translucent panels form a breathable skin that responds to the changing environment. An existing barn is retained on site, maintaining a link to the area's agricultural past. Tutor(s)
