Timeless Transitions: Bridging past and present in Benfield Valley

Part 2 Project 2025

This project transforms the Benfield Barn Conservation Area into a community hub that honours the site’s agricultural past while addressing the needs of a growing community. Once part of Benfield Manor Farm, the Grade II-listed Sussex barn and surrounding flint walls had fallen into disrepair. As the surrounding landscape undergoes rapid development, the proposal reclaims the site’s role as a place for gathering, connection, and shared identity.

Three low-carbon pavilions form a sheltered courtyard, drawing on the spatial language of the historic farmstead to shape new patterns of public life. Each carries a distinct architectural character shaped by its function: one quiet and inward facing for learning, one open and social for making and gathering, and one flexible and civic for events.

The proposal draws inspiration from local materials and vernacular forms, guided by a close understanding of how people move through and inhabit the site. Traditional methods are reinterpreted using low-impact materials and passive design strategies, reducing environmental impact while reinforcing a strong sense of place.

In doing so, the project restores meaning to a forgotten site, offering a hopeful vision for how architecture can renew heritage, connect communities, and shape futures.
