Beauty and great architecture transcends civilizations. lt is not mutually exclusive to only one culture - rather beauty can manifest itself in different languages of architecture with the same underlying principles of harmonious compositions. This assignment explores the link between different cultures' architecture through the unity of proportions to a whole. The dome of the Hungarian Parliament building and the Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, although different in size, have a proportional relationship to the building they rest upon. Located at the center, the verticality of the domes balances the horizontality of their respective buildings. The openings and columnar orders, as vertical components of the facade, had similar propositions to the central structure of the dome. When compared side by side, the string courses, cornice lines, arcaded levels and ridge lines correspond as if one building was composed of two d ifferent facades united in equal partitions. Beauty exists not within the bounds of a certain style or cultural ornamentation; it is a universal language best expressed when proportions of a whole complement one another. As demonstrated in this assignment, great architecture, regardless of its location, speaks the same language to us when rooted in the fundamental principles of harmony.
