Trinity House Lighthouse Museum and Granite Workshop Part 1 Project 2019 Nick Franklin University of East London London | UK The Trinity House Lighthouse Museum and Granite Workshop is an institution that celebrates the history of Penzance and is the focal point for the revival of the granite industry on the Penwith peninsula. By first looking at the Queen’s House, Greenwich, and then working with the Trinity House Buoy Store building on Penzance’s waterfront, the proposal engages with Trinity House’s rich tradition of providing safe passage for goods and people through its work as the national lighthouse authority and lighthouse builder.The original Trinity House lighthouses, like the town of Penzance itself, were carved from the granite the town sits on, and by reviving this industry and reflecting the interlocking geometry of the town, the proposal seeks to reimagine this process in the creation of itself. The project is thus carved and mined out of the granite and, like the lighthouses, shines a new light on the ability to reuse historic infrastructure in new and imaginative ways.In one of the most deprived towns in the UK, this civic institution seeks to build new capabilities and skills for a new generation of seafarers, miners and stonemasons, as well as creating a place to celebrate the rich history of Cornwall.
