OKR People's Enterprise

Part 2 Project 2023

The projects aims to combat mental health issues and economic deprivation on OKR by combining ideas about Ikigai and self actualisation with a small scale craft workshop model. The aim is to employ ex- convicts and provide them with an income as well as free housing subsidised by the profits created by the business. The scheme will create a sense of community for these people, with shared workspaces and common rooms. The aim is for the work to help people develop a sense of purpose while providing them with new skills, which can then be explored and expanded on in their own private studies.

The weaving process is a vessel for one to find a craft that offers them purpose. It is an initial step to a journey of exploration and self-actualisation.

The scheme adopts a modern monastic model for life, with time devoted to the practice of a craft. It is based around a courtyard. The “Weaving Monks” work to find meaning for themselves, but also to contribute to the local community by providing a service for them to use, and have positive environmental impact at a wider scale.
