Raising Refuge

Part 1 Project 2024

'Bibby Stockholm', the notorious barge off the coast of the UK, is used by the government as an disgusting example of how they believe we should care for the 504 asylum seekers on board. This proposal provides housing for 505 asylum seekers as a retort to the example of care set by the now-gone Conservative government.

The residential areas are raised atop a truss, organised into deconstructed blocks and linked together by a path which meanders across the site. This leaves the street level open. Servicing pulleys are periodically located throughout the grid and can be lowered to provide power, water etc. With the space and infrastructure provided, the residents are free to use the space as they wish.
