This project aims to provide a central hub for the community in Chatham Intra. Hosting an open kitchen and adjacent gardens the space promotes a sustainable lifestyle and community engagement. The design prioritises inclusivity and accessibility creating a vibrant space for residents to cultivate a sense of belonging. The proposal also provides the community a free “third space”, which as a concept has declined in recent years. The term coined by sociologist Ray Oldenburg, is used to describe a place outside the home or work where people can connect and meet others from within their community for free. Due to the recent pandemic, cost of living crisis and increased use of social media there has been a growing disconnect between people. I aim to propose a project that encourages interaction among residents while learning skills such as gardening and cooking together that will improve their quality of life.
