The Old Science Block retrofit exemplifies the commitment of our profession in mitigating environmental impact and creating vibrant, sustainable spaces for future generations.

The Cornerstone project is derived from the engagement between students, academics and visitors on campus. The significance of foot-traffic in the surrounding area was undeniably clear; the need to capture this movement and turn it into something constructive became inherent.

The proposal elevates the existing floors into three double height spaces. To symbolise the breathing space needed to encourage collaboration, engagement & movement. These three platforms are shifted and chamfered according to circulation patterns analysed, creating a contorted form.

Furthermore, opens a landscape below, providing an outdoor human scale space.

The existing structure will remain unaltered, creating this illusion of movement within the building. This will be due to the existing frame being encapsulated by the new form or by protruding out of the new planes. Keeping the existing structure will be symbolic of what previous modernist buildings can support in the future.

Materiality is essential to giving the land due homage. Before the construction of campus there stood a chalk quarry. The consistent use of a chalk rendered finish provides an ecological & environmental benefit.
